The History of Reflexology

Reflexology is an ancient healing therapy, which was practised thousands of years ago by the Chinese and Egyptian people. It was also known to some of the primitive tribes of Africa and to the Red Indians. Reflexology was introduced to the Western World in 1913 by Dr William Fitzgerald an American Ear, Nose & Throat surgeon and was later refined by Eunice Ingham in the later 1930's

What is Reflexology?

It is a natural healing therapy based on the principal that every organ system and part of the body has a corresponding reflex area or zone in the feet. As the Therapist applies gentle, but firm, pressure to these reflexes it stimulates the body's own natural energy f low and helps to release any blockages in these energy pathways. This eases tension and improves nerve and blood supply. Improving blood and lymphatic circulation subsequently helps the elimination of waste toxins accumulated within the tissues and cells of the body. It also helps to bring vital nutrients to the cells. Thus the free f low of energy restores balance to the whole body. This gentle therapy encourages the body to heel itself at its own pace.

What happens when I have a Reflexology treatment?

Your first visit will be slightly longer than subsequent visits because it is one of assessment. Your feet will be examined and any sensitive areas noted. Any slight discomfort should not last and is the result of stress or an imbalance in that particular part of the body. Areas for future treatment will be identified. A general medical history and details of lifestyle, diet etc., are noted. Treatment also includes a general relaxing foot massage.

Reflexology may be carried out on the hands where conditions prevent the treatment being performed on the feet. Many people have a feeling of well being and relaxation after treatment, which itself is of great benefit and reduces stress and tension.

The Reflexologist will want to know how you react to each treatment in order to help plan subsequent treatments

What conditions can be treated?

Reflexology has been effective in treating many acute and chronic conditions including:

Back pain / joint pain
Asthma / Allergies
Insomnia / sleep problems
Sinusitis
Skin disorders
Headaches / Migraine
PMT / menstrual problems
Digestive complaints
Kidney and bladder conditions
Arthritis
Stress & stress related disorders

Reflexology can also be used as a preventative measure. It boosts the immune system, reduces stress and strengthens the body in general.

It is a safe, effective treatment for people of all ages, including children

How many treatments will I need?
This will vary according to each individual's needs and how quickly their body responds. An average is a course of 6 weekly treatments, with follow up fortnightly or monthly treatments to maintain the sense of well being
